History

Tibetan medicine is deeply rooted in the history of Buddhism, and the Buddha himself taught medicine to his disciples. The earliest forms of Tibetan medicine were practiced before the Buddha, and the cornerstones of what we consider traditional Tibetan medicine today date back to the 8th century AD.Yuthok Yonten Gonpo, known as the king of physicians, wrote the “Gyüshi,” which describes 84,000 illnesses and hundreds of herbal formulas and became a standard of Tibetan medicine.

History

This tradition draws on thousands of years of lived experience of physicians in Tibet and neighboring countries. Today, Tibetan medicine is practiced around the world. The Swiss government has recognized and tested the practice of Tibetan medicine, and Russia has recently allowed the use of Tibetan medicine to treat COVID-19.

Elements And Energies

The five elements—earth, water, fire, wind, and space—are the foundation of Tibetan medicine. Everything in the universe and in our bodies is comprised of these elements, and finding optimal balance brings physical, mental, and spiritual health. From the Tibetan viewpoint, a person’s belief that they are separate from their environment—resulting in greed, hatred, and ignorance—is the root cause of disease. Factors, like nutrition, behavior, environment, season, and spiritual or emotional life also contribute. At its heart, Tibetan medicine aims to help a person find balance and connection.

In the body, the five elements combine to form three energies, or humors, which each connect to an element. Understanding the three energies can help us see our imbalance. The three energies are:

  • Lung—element of air. Helps the body circulate energy, substances, and thoughts. Mental poison of greed. Properties are light, flexible, cold, rough, or dry.
  • Tripa—element of fire. Present in the body as heat, metabolism, liver function, and intellect. Mental poison of hatred. Properties are hot, spicy, dry, rough, light, oily.
  • Beken—elements of earth and water. Present in the body as coolness, digestion, joint health, and mental stability. Mental poison of ignorance. Properties are heavy, stable, dull, liquid, cool, heavy, flexible.
